The tortoise and the hare
I'm now into month 3 of a slightly over-engineered 12 month bet with my mate Russell (aka Dr Rugby). The fine print is this:
- There was an official weighing process on or about Jan 1, 2006.
- There will be another official weighing process on or about Jan 1, 2007, followed by a race around the Bay Run. Whoever has lost the most weight as a percentage of their starting weight will receive a head start equal in minutes to the difference in percentage weight lost by myself and russell over the 12 months (i.e. if I lose 5% of my starting weight, and Russell loses 12%, he gets a 7 minute head start).
- The penalty for coming last in that race (which is 7km long) is to have to do a second lap immediately.
The last time we went man-to-man on the bay run (about 6 months after an inatentive cabbie made my femur snap) I totally broke his will. So I reckon if I can keep the head start to under 5 minutes I'll break him again.
Russell's plan appears to be 12 months of no beer and moderate exercise. My plan was to ignore the whole deal till october, then go cold turkey and hit the tarmac for the last 3 months. But now I've found The Couch to 5k running plan (thanks to James Webster) which claims to only need 2 months. Roll on November...

Pleased to see someone else is onto 'The Plan'. You won't be breaking records at the end of it, but you will be able to run 30 minutes at a consistent pace!
